چکیده

Telemetry studies have provided unprecedented information about the activity, spatial ecology and energetics of free-swimming fishes (Lucas & Baras, 2000; Cooke et al., 2004). These studies, however, require tagging of fishes with radio or acoustic transmitters. The effects of these transmitters are often assumed to be negligible as far as the transmitter:fish mass ratio (Rtf) is <2% in air (Winter, 1983). This rule of thumb has been challenged by testing survival, growth, healing, health and swimming performance of tagged fishes (Bridger & Booth, 2003). The effect of the transmitter on swimming performance is usually determined by measuring the critical swimming speed (Ucrit) (Mellas & Haynes, 1985; Brown et al., 1999; Cote et al., 1999; Koed & Thorstad, 2001). But information about the possible increase in energy demand during the Ucrit test is absent. This information, though, may be highly relevant, especially if the transmitter is used to estimate swimming costs of fishes. In this case, the direct effect of the transmitter on energy expenditure at different swimming speeds should be evaluated. Atlantic cod Gadus morhua L. is widely used in telemetry studies as information about activity and swimming cost is

Physiology and behaviour of free-swimming Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) facing fluctuating temperature conditions

Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.), acclimated to 5 °C, were equipped with ultrasonic transmitters which allowed the continuous monitoring of their vertical movements and heart rate. Fish were then placed in a 125 m3 tower tank in which the various thermal conditions they encounter in their natural environment were reproduced. Physiological and behavioural responses of cod were followed in para...

Physiology and behaviour of free-swimming Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) facing fluctuating salinity and oxygenation conditions

1. Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) acclimated to a temperature of 5 °C and 30 salinity were equipped with ultrasonic transmitters which allowed continuous monitoring of their heart rate and their position in the water column. Fish were placed in a 125 m3 tower tank which permitted various environmentally relevant modifications of the salinity and oxygenation conditions. Cod physiological and...

Aerobic and anaerobic swimming performance of individual Atlantic cod.

Individual Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) were exercised using three different measures of swimming performance. (1) An endurance test (critical swimming speed, U(crit), protocol) designed to assess predominantly aerobic endurance swimming (duration hours). (2) An acceleration test (U(burst)), in which the fish were required to swim against a rapidly increasing current until exhausted (duration mi...

Spontaneous Swimming Activity of Atlantic Cod Gadus Morhua Exposed to Graded Hypoxia at Three Temperatures

The spontaneous swimming activity of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua was investigated at graded levels of hypoxia at three temperatures (5, 10 and 15 °C) by using a computerized system monitoring animal activity. The fish were tested individually, and swimming distance was used as a measure of activity. No significant effect of temperature on swimming distance in normoxic water was found. At all ...

Effect of acute and chronic hypoxia on the swimming performance, metabolic capacity and cardiac function of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua).

Low water oxygen content (hypoxia) is a common feature of many freshwater and marine environments. However, we have a poor understanding of the degree to which diminished cardiac function contributes to the reduction in fish swimming performance concomitant with acute exposure to hypoxia, or how fish cardiorespiratory physiology is altered by, or adapts to, chronic hypoxia. Thus, we acclimated ...
